Caroline is a social pin in our community here at The Pearl Works. She makes a point to get to know new members and connect with people in the space. Caroline is a caregiver, connector, lover of books, and sports center enthusiast. Read on to learn more about this incredibly caring human!

What is one of your superpowers?

Perhaps my superist superpower is deeply connecting with people, making them feel seen and heard. Secondarily is connecting people with one another for their mutual benefit. Even though the pandemic made me more comfortable with my introvert self, at heart, I am a people person.

What are you working on right now?

Professionally, my energies are going into three areas: 1) Creating a series of illustrated children’s books called My Mama’s Bag, taking children, parents, educators on magical adventures into other cultures; 2) Designing (and in a few instances, maintaining) websites; and 3) Building Global Villagers Community (along with three other locals), a group for people who love all things international.

I am also taking care of my 86 year old mother who has dementia. While she doesn’t live directly with us, caring for her and her affairs takes a good deal of my energy and time.

What book are you currently reading? What do you love about it? Would you recommend it? And why or why not?

I’m currently listening to Lessons in Chemistry. It’s fun and fascinating! It causes me to think outside the box, and I like that. The book is so good Apple made a mini-series of it. Yes, I would recommend it because of the way it helps me reimagine the world.

I’m also reading two nonfiction books, but right now I’m focused on finishing up Lessons, and that’s where my head’s at.

What’s a valuable lesson you’ve learned recently?

In the midst of a very tumultuous last five years, I’d say I’ve learned to simply see people better. Namely, when I relate with you, I’m not just relating to who you are as you’re standing right in front of me, but rather to the totality of you—who you are, the experiences you’ve had leading up to this moment, and all the dreams you hold in your heart. Weirdly, I feel like I now have a type of 3D-awareness when interacting with others.

What’s your favorite thing about working at The Pearl Works?

I just love this place! Everything! I love the hush and coziness of TPW in the early morning. I love the community—amazing people from diverse backgrounds I’ve met and gotten to know thanks to TPW. Discovering The Pearl Works (thanks, Liz!) has been like finding an oasis in the middle of a desert—especially during a hard period of my life that’s required a good deal of redefinition for me. In so many ways, it feels like a second home 🙂

Caroline has been a pod desk member of The Pearl Works since October 2022. Most mornings you will find her at her cozy corner Pod Desk on the first floor of The Pearl Works, easing into her day.
